Umekita Park is Osaka’s newest major green space and one of the most ambitious urban redevelopment projects in Japan. Located immediately north of JR Osaka Station, it forms the heart of the massive Grand Green Osaka development, which is transforming what was once a vast rail freight yard into a modern district of parks, offices, hotels, shops and residences.

The name “Umekita” simply means “north of Umeda.” For decades, most of Umeda’s commercial activity was concentrated south of Osaka Station. In recent years, however, development has steadily expanded northward with projects like Chayamachi, Yodobashi Umeda and Grand Front Osaka. Grand Green Osaka is the latest and most significant stage of this transformation.
Unlike previous developments, Grand Green Osaka places the park itself at the center. The completed park will cover approximately 45,000 square meters, making it one of the largest urban parks directly connected to a major railway terminal anywhere in Japan. The South Park section is already open, while the forested North Park is scheduled to open in spring 2027.

The South Park features broad lawns, open spaces and a refreshing sense of calm that comes as a surprise in the middle of one of Japan’s busiest urban districts. The North Park will add the lush “Umekita Forest,” creating an even greener environment. The park is connected directly to Osaka Station via an elevated pedestrian walkway known as Hirameki-no-Michi (Path of Inspiration).
One of the nicest things about Umekita Park is its convenience. The underground platforms used by the Haruka Airport Express from Kansai International Airport lie almost directly beneath the park. This makes it an ideal place to stop for a few minutes, stretch your legs and take a deep breath after arriving in Japan.

Visitors whose image of Osaka is one of crowded streets, neon signs and endless concrete may be surprised by Umekita Park. Starting your exploration of the city here creates an interesting contrast with the older neighborhoods that helped make Osaka famous and offers a glimpse of the city’s future.
