Namba’s Cafe Yusoshi Chano-ma offers coffee and tea, balanced and nutritious lunch sets, a la carte and side-dish standards, and gourmet sweets.

Cafe Yusoshi Chano-ma Namba is a great fusion of trendy upmarket cafe dining with family-friendly touches – and if you visit, you’ll see that attested in just how many families and groups of mama-tomo (mommy-friends) show up in its lunchtime crowd.

The overall execution is very much in the mold of cafes specializing in earthier fare with well-balanced options and retro hipster bent popular in such areas as Tokyo’s Shimokitazawa, Osaka’s Nakazakicho (e.g. Babyleaf on our Best Osaka Restaurants for Families with Young Children and Babies list), or much of Kyoto city.

The Space
The dining room in Cafe Yusoshi Chano-ma is divided into two areas: regular tables with chairs, and a raised, undivided flat sofa seating area with cushions and ultra low-profile tray-tables that fuses something like traditional Japanese tatami spaces with a modern minimalist take on an almost Moroccan- or Turkish-inspired dining area. The latter is an excellent choice if you’re dining with kids under the age of five – or even if you just enjoy the vibe.

The Service and Amenities
Service is solidly standard, with a menu that’s mostly Japanese but has basic notes in English that cover the main idea of each item even if not catching every detail. Photos make it easy to point and order. Those with no Japanese ability at all might feel a very slight hurdle when it comes to specific details on the food, but nothing likely to disrupt the experience significantly. There is no separate kids menu, but sharing set meals or ordering for kids a la carte is easy enough.

The cafe’s location on the seventh floor of a large shopping center is handy for feeling somewhat removed from the hustle and bustle of life outside while still being readily accessible on a day of shopping (and providing an easy retreat from the restaurant into the shopping center’s child-friendly bathrooms or other areas if a quick diaper change or emergency cooldown is necessary).

The Food
As mentioned, the food at Cafe Yusoshi Chano-ma leans toward earthier fare with a health-conscious and hipster-traditionalist bent. Every dish is delicious and a good representation of it in its Japanese classic modern form: from the sekihan red-bean rice, tsukemono pickles, miso soup, fried croquettes, minced cutlets, and japchae Korean-style glass-noodle stirfry. The sensibilities behind each set meal and the presentation with which they are served seem evocative of a casual modern take on traditional kaiseki cuisine.

If some of that sounds a little bit too exotic or adventurous for your little one, fear not: pizza, steak fries, and fried cheese sticks a la carte round out the menu for some fallback options.
