On the east side of Honmachi, in the direction of Osaka Castle, this hidden unagi (eel) specialist is a great place to try sublime unagi in refined and relaxing surroundings. It’s a good idea to have a Japanese speaker call in advance for reservations and to place the order. It’s down a small private walkway.

Unagi specialist Yoshitora has been serving up some of Osaka’s most sublime grilled eel since 1922. If you like eel, you’ll love this place - the tender, steamed, grilled freshwater eel brushed with sweet-salty tare is some of the best you’ll find in the city.

Located down a private walkway between two buildings, it’s not the easiest place to find, but worth the extra effort if you love a good bowl of unagi. Though the decor errs on the side of stiff and traditional, both Western-style table seating and Japanese-style floor seats are available here.

Yoshitora is a decidedly upscale restaurant. That’s reflected not just in the quality of the eel, but also in the prices. A simple eel rice bowl lunch here starts at around JPY4,000 and can quickly escalate depending on your order. Still, good unagi isn’t cheap - especially as supplies of freshwater eel are dwindling - and it’s perfectly fine to pay a little extra for a great meal.
