A variety of tasty vegan and gluten-free adaptations of iconic Osaka fare served in comfy, casual private dining rooms.

The straightforwardly named Vegan & Gluten-free Osaka is a standout among the city’s vegetarian and vegan offerings for something that feels like it should be much more common than it is: actually adapting the city’s most characteristic and iconic dishes into vegan (and gluten-free!) form. For this, in my eyes, it definitely earns its whole name.

This also makes it my go-to place for taking friends or family visiting Osaka with dietary restrictions. If you’ve heard it mentioned as an Osaka dish, you will probably find it here, from okonomiyaki, kushikatsu, takoyaki, and temakizushi (hand-roll sushi) to karaage, gyoza, and ramen. Salads, french fries, and karaage fried “chicken” are available as sides, as well as chocolate and sweet potato rum raisin cakes for dessert – each and every one completely vegan and gluten free.
The menu also gives the full ingredient list for each and every item, which is extremely helpful for those with other specific dietary limitations such as allergies or religious practices, and not something I see even at most other vegan places.

The shop features eight dining rooms, and each is completely private – which, as someone who at the time of this writing often has to wrangle a 3-year-old through the Umeda crowds, I greatly appreciate. As such, I also recommend it for diners with children or just anyone who wants a little respite from the bustling crowds while they eat.
Located underground in the Dai-4 Building of the sprawling and labyrinthine Osaka Eki-mae complex, the shop can be a bit difficult to locate depending on where you enter from. I’ll admit to getting turned around more than once when navigating the underground area. It’s helpful to know that it shares a space with The Second Room Cafe, and in most of the floor maps posted on the interior corridor walls, it is listed under that name.
Although the Dai-4 building basement areas are accessible through underground passages from the surrounding buildings and stations, visitors unfamiliar with the area are advised to enter the Dai-4 Building directly from the street level and head down the stairs from there to minimize navigation difficulties.
