Teppanjinja’s Kitashinchi location is a moderately upscale dinner and drinks teppanyaki joint, impressive for serving a wide range of Japanese fare with consistently exceptional quality.

There is no sense burying the lede here: when I had my first meal at Teppanjinja just about a year and half or so before the time of this writing, the shop immediately and decisively won me over as one of my new favorite group or date dinner spots in Osaka. I can clearly remember the moment it happened. The exact bite, even.
I was one of a group of four, with two regulars and one other newbie. We were in the middle of an animated conversation when the kuroge wagyu saaroin kushi (Japanese Black sirloin skewers) were brought out. The first bite stopped our conversation cold, stunning me and the other newbie and eliciting proud knowing grins from the regulars who brought us.
In case you miss my point, let me be less ambiguous: Try the kuroge wagyu sirloin skewers. They are easily worth their own special visit. That’s the good news. The better news is that they’re hardly the only thing on the menu in their class. That would hardly impress me so much by itself. I mean, come on: It’s Japanese Black (kuroge wagyu) sirloin. It had better be delicious.
No, what really makes Teppanjinja (“The Griddle Shrine”) impressive to me is the incredible balance between its wide range of fare (not uncommon for an izakaya or teppan-yaki joint) and exceptional quality on all fronts. Usually you go into these places expecting them to have a few flagship dishes or a standout area of expertise, with the rest there as second-tier filler that good enough but not great.
Not so here. Skewered griddle-seared meats and seafoods, veggies and yakitori, fresh sashimi and sushi, and great drinks and dessert to top it all off: Teppanjinja lives up to its name It’s a holy place of food. But do be aware – this degree of excellence comes with a higher than average price tag.
