If you’re around JR Osaka Station and craving lunch, the 14th floor of Daimaru Umeda is chock-a-block with tasty restaurants. Tonkatsu specialist Tazumura is just one of many choices on this floor - and it’s a fabulous option for pork lovers!

If you’ve ever eaten pork from heritage pig breeds, you know just how much better they taste than your average supermarket chop. Reigning supreme among all of these is the Berkshire pig, beloved and feted by gourmands around the world. But did you know that kurobuta or “black hog” pork is just the Japanese name for Berkshire pig? So whenever you see tonkatsu restaurants using “kurobuta” in their dishes, just know that it means that you’re about to eat some extremely delicious, tender, juicy, fat-laced pork.

To sample some, head over to the 14th floor of Daimaru Umeda in JR Osaka Station, and order yourself some tonkatsu at Tazumura. Fine pork cutlets sourced from Kirishima-bred Berkshire pigs are coated in panko breadcrumbs before being slowly deep-fried in canola oil. The extra, moreish crunch comes from extra-coarse breadcrumbs. Provenance is just as important when it comes to their other ingredients. They use rice from Kyotango City in Kyoto, tofu skin from Kyoto, and more!
With tonkatsu sets ranging from JPY1400 to JPY1800, meals here are reasonably affordable, especially when you consider the quality of the food you’re getting. It is also tourist-friendly, with English, Chinese, and Korean-language menus available upon request.
