For a twist on the usual takoyaki, head over to Takohachi in Tennoji and eat some akashiyaki instead. It’s similar to takoyaki, but is dipped in a light, delicious dashi broth instead. Great for those who want to try a lighter style of this snack instead.

Takoyaki is well-known even among most tourists to Osaka. But fewer visitors are aware of ‘akashiyaki.’ Hailing from Akashi City in Hyogo prefecture, this dish is oddly similar to takoyaki in some ways. ‘Akashiyaki’ is an octopus dumpling as well, but made with an eggy batter, and eaten dipped in dashi stock rather than slathered with sauce or mayonnaise. Unlike takoyaki, it has a slightly spongier texture, and unsurprisingly, a richer eggy taste to the batter.

If you’re keen on trying akashiyaki, there are few better restaurants in town than Takohachi. It’s what they recommend eating at theirs - though they also have the usual takoyaki offerings, too. You’ll pour hot dashi broth from a vessel into a bowl, and when the akashiyaki arrives, dip it into the broth and eat with mitsuba leaves, ginger, and sliced green onions available table-side.

In general, Takohachi is one of the few places which allows you to personally add the sauce and toppings as you eat, rather than the staff adding them prior to serving. It’s great if you’re the kind of person who likes controlling exactly how much sauce or mayonnaise you eat. Try the takoyaki balls as they are and enjoy the taste of the batter before slapping on the condiments table-side.
