Shin-Umeda Shokudogai

Shin-Umeda Shokudogai is a labyrinth-like warren of tiny restaurants located under the railway tracks of JR Osaka Station. It’s delightfully atmospheric, lively, and full of great food - your only problem will be deciding what to eat.

Stepping into Shin-Umeda Shokudogai is like time warping back to the 1950s, minus the potential fire hazards. You leave the shiny, glittering environs of JR Osaka Station to dive into a warren of low-ceilinged, narrow alleyways lined with equally tiny restaurants where you can eat practically anything and everything - from okonomiyaki to udon, there’s something to satisfy every appetite here. There’s even a French restaurant or two hidden somewhere in here.

They’ve managed to squeeze over 100 eateries into this 2-story food mall. You could spend an evening here doing what Osakans do best - kuidaore, or eating until you fall over. One of the best ways to enjoy Shin-Umeda Shokudogai is head in with a friend or two, and graze at several restaurants over the course of an evening - like bar-hopping, but with food rather than drinks.

How does one navigate this area? There are occasional maps and numbered diagrams on the walls, which are all labeled in Japanese. You can, of course, try deciphering them; but it’s probably more fun to just wander in somewhere that takes your fancy. A number of these restaurants are likely to have English menus, thanks to the number of tourists in the area.

If you’d rather stick to something safe, look for Kiji, one of the city’s most famous okonomiyaki restaurants. You’ll recognise it by the bright yellow sign and the long queue snaking outside its doors at lunch and dinner hours.
