Nakanoshima-koen Park in the Kita district is one of the most centrally-located green spaces in Osaka. Home to a stunning rose garden and a fantastic museum nearby, it’s a favourite hangout spot for locals at lunchtimes and on the weekends.

Nakanoshima-koen Park is one of Osaka’s prettiest, oldest, and most centrally-located green spaces in the city. Think of it as an answer to New York’s Central Park, albeit much smaller and floating on an island between two rivers. It’s a good place to have on your radar when the weather is gorgeous and you’re exploring the area on foot.

Like most parks, Nakashima-koen Park can look pretty drab in winter, but it comes into its own when the roses are in full bloom. The rose garden boasts over 4000 different roses across 89 varieties, and they bloom from around early May to early November. Admission is free, so you’ll have plenty of company with you to admire the fragrant blossoms in warmer weather.

Of course, it’s also a good place to watch people - you might find locals here practising some dance moves or instruments. In the summer months, there’s also a riverside beer garden so you can drink and lounge on the grass under the sun. Don’t forget your sunscreen.
The lawn is officially closed from November to early May to allow the grass to recover, but you can still walk around the park and sit on the benches if you don’t mind the lower temperatures at this time of the year. Then again, there’s always the Museum of Oriental Ceramics nearby when it gets too cold outside.
