This classic udon joint in Kitashinchi does the thick springy noodle right. Its curry udon in particular shouldn’t be missed.

Udon has long held a special place in my heart. Don’t get me wrong, I love noodles of all kinds – but there is something about the springy texture of udon, its mild flavor, and even its chunky white visual that makes it pair with certain strong tastes like a beef or curry with a harmony that in my opinion many other noodles just can’t manage. Many dishes in Japan treat it as interchangeable with soba, but for my money there are certain paired flavors and textures where it’s udon or bust. Curry udon, for example, is simply something more than the sum of its parts in a way that just isn’t the same with soba or ramen. On a cold night, especially, it is quintessential comfort food.
If I’m not making it for myself, probably my favorite place to eat curry udon in Osaka is at Kagawa Udon in Osaka’s Kitashinchi nightlife and dining neighborhood. The noodles here are handmade, the curry spice blend is perfectly balanced, and you can even get extra comforting sides like perfectly crispy, piping-hot tempura or umami-sweet oden.
If curry isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other great udon bowls on offer like sanuki or beef – the latter being another flavor that for me just pairs with udon in a way that other noodles just don’t. The oden here is a bit on the sweet side, but whether that’s good or bad is up to your personal preference. And if you’re a night-owl or a pub crawler with the munchies, good news: Kagawa knows just how well a bowl of noodles hits the spot after a few rounds of ritual after-hours libations, keeping its doors open until 3:30am.
