Cafe Prana is a macrobiotic, vegetarian, and vegan dining cafe and cooking school focused on dietary health and deliciousness.

If you’re in the Utsubo Park or Honmachi neighborhoods of Osaka and looking for some great delicious vegan, macrobiotic, or just plain healthy and delicious home-style Japanese cooking, Cafe Prana is the place to go. The dishes here are earthy and authentic in their use of earthy home cooking comfort food staples like sekihan (glutinous rice steamed with adzuki beans), lotus root, nori and hijiki seaweeds, tsukemono pickles, and the like.

Cafe Prana doesn’t have an English menu, but helpful staff and photos go a long way to bridge that gap © Angelino Donnachaidh
In addition to serving a fully vegan menu, the cafe also places a lot of focus on dietary health and nutritional balance – so much so that it even doubles as a venue for cooking school classes aimed at training home cooks of all experience levels to make satisfying meals and desserts that are also healthy, macrobiotic, vegetarian or vegan, and free of pesticides and processed grains or sugars. It bills its cooking philosophy as “delicious and fun meals that made with gratitude for nature.”
While the guiltless meals at Prana are definitely nutritious, delicious, and authentically Japanese, it’s worth noting that flavors skew delicate and subtle, and portion sizes are on the smaller side. If you’re a hefty eater or like very strong flavors, you may find yourself wanting for a little more. I come here if I’m in the mood for a light and all-natural meal that soothes and nurtures without processed food sensory overload – which admittedly isn’t all the time – but for that mood, Cafe Prana’s offerings can’t be beat.
