A bit of a hike from Shin-Osaka Station, close to Kanzakigawa Station on the Hankyu Kobe Line, this sanuki udon specialist is worth the trip for udon fans. The name is written in English on the sign, so it should be easy to find.

Sanuki udon is all about the chewy wheat noodles. For most serious fans, you can’t beat having a bowl in Kagawa prefecture - the birthplace of this noodle style. But for the rest of us who don’t have the time or money to schlep all the way out to that part of Japan, the next best thing is trying it elsewhere. If you’re in Shin-Osaka, Byakuan is the place to head to for your Sanuki udon fix.

Besides the delicate, smooth, yet ultra-chewy noodles, the broth at Byakuan makes this bowl a far better slurp than most. The broth is a gorgeous, complex brew of sardines, Hokkaido kelp, and bonito flakes from Kochi prefecture, the kind that makes you wish you could drink it every day.

Extremely serious fans of Sanuki udon do tend to complain about the price of the dish outside Kagawa. You can eat a bowl of these noodles in the prefecture for around JPY200, while prices at Byakuan are more on par with city lunches. And, this place is popular enough for there to be a queue outside at lunchtimes. But if you love Sanuki udon and need your fix, you probably don’t want to miss a meal at Byakuan.
