Shinsaibashi isn’t just a district for Japanese-style drinking and dining. Bistrot d’Anjou is one of the city’s best French bistros, and it’s located just off the Ebisubashi shopping arcade. Lest you think that French food here is merely a passing fad, know that they’ve been serving up classic bistro fare to Osakans for the last 40 or so years in the city. It’s a real testament to the quality of their dishes, that tourists and expats come here specifically for good French food too!

The menu isn’t surprising or inventive, but that’s the whole point here. All the bistro classics appear: escargot with butter and parsley, slices of foie gras terrine, a rich coq au vin, steamed mussels in cream and white wine, wild rabbit with chanterelle mushroom sauce. It’s all as evocative of the French countryside as it sounds. Desserts are exactly as you hope they’ll be: well-executed classics like profiteroles, creme brulee, and chocolate mousse.

Perhaps one of the best things, of course, is how affordable all of this is. A three course dinner will set you back just JPY3500 or so. It almost goes without saying that lunches are even more affordable. For those craving a taste of France in Osaka, Bistrot d’Anjou is your next gustatory stop.
