Namba’s Biken Gochisou Buffet Hanamomimo serves up a gourmet buffet with a great variety of food styles on offer.

Located in the Namba Parks shopping center, Biken Gochisou Buffet is the second buffet on our Best Osaka Restaurants For Families With Young Children And Babies list, and an increasingly rare eatery find – one offering a diverse range of high-quality gourmet food at a midrange budget price point.

The Space
As a shopping center restaurant, Biken Gochisou’s dining room and buffet area are both standard and comfortable in a way that will be immediately familiar to visitors from all around the world. Limited booth seating is available. The nearest set of bathrooms (including diaper changing support) are located a very short walk outside the entrance to the restaurant within Namba Parks.

Although the dining room is one large contiguous space, some partitions were used to break up the flow of traffic and noise, and the staff seemed to be placing all families with kids in the same area of the partitions. This is one of those little touches that speaks to attentive service and makes life easier for everyone.
The Service and Amenities
With high chairs, child cutlery, thoughtful seating, a great lineup of child-friendly food, and nearby bathrooms with diaper changing stations, Biken Gochisou Buffet Hanamomimo doesn’t leave diners with small children wanting for anything.

The buffet price comes with a single-serving “main dish” – a small meat or fish entree ordered immediately upon arrival and served at the table. Everything else is gotten at the buffet.

The freedom to concoct your own specialty desserts is sure to be a crowd-pleaser for families with kids. Options include character-shaped monaka (Japanese wagashi confections made of crispy mochi wafers sandwiching a sweet filling) with a variety of flavored adzuki sweet bean pastes, and ice cream sundaes with all the traditional trimmings plus some Japan-specific options like matcha syrup, kuromitsu, and warabimochi.

The Food
Biken Gochisou Buffet has an impressive variety of food on offer, and some real standout dishes with high-quality flavor and mouthfeel that really surprise for a buffet at this price point.

Of course, if you’re the parent of a small child, you’re probably just as interested to know whether that gourmet angle translates into anything your tot would actually eat without resistance. And luckily it does. To name some recommendations: crispy fried chicken or vegetable fritters, bean curry, sausages, candied sweet potato, various kinds of rice, an assortment of bread options, udon noodles in broth, and chicken pho noodles. All of these were surprisingly good, even by adult standards.

The buffet’s age-dashi-dofu was also unexpectedly impressive, and better than lots of traditional restaurants and izakaya pubs. Though my little one isn’t a big fan of the eggplant in the dish, the fried and broth-marinated tofu chunks from which it gets its name were a hit with her.

As with all buffets, the food at Biken Gochisou Buffet Hanamomimo is at its best when it is first served. This means the best time to go is as close as possible to the beginning of each meal service period (11:00am for lunch, 5:00pm for dinner) for the most reliably fresh and tasty eats. This doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy your meal if you go later – only that you will be at the mercy of the timing of the depletion/replacement cycle.
